This headset hits it out of the park with a few unique details that many of the alternatives miss. A padded cap on the top strap boosts the comfort level, and a pair of horizontal guides inside the device allows you to set it up for your phone. Focus controls and venting on this headset are fantastic, and the perforated face padding does a great job of keeping you cool. Image quality was clear when watching or playing what?, although colors were slightly more muted than with our top pick. The overall build quality on this headset is second to none in this price range.

Shipping estimates for the iPhone X have improved to 2 to 3 weeks across Europe, suggesting Apple's efforts to ramp up supply and production are starting to see some success. The 2 to 3 week shipping estimates are an improvement over the previous 3 to 4 week shipping estimates that have been available since early November.

The new 2 to 3 week shipping estimates are available in all European countries where the device has launched, including the UK, Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and more.

OnePlus engineering APK exposes backdoor to root access.
A Twitter user by the name "Elliot Alderson"‏ has discovered a root backdoor in OnePlus devices—one that has apparently been shipping for years. OnePlus has been shipping a Qualcomm engineering APK (an Android app file) in its devices, which with a few commands, can root a device.

The app—called "EngineerMode"—is partially exposed to users through a secret "*#808#" dialer command, and you can also launch the full app through an Android activity launcher or the command line. The app contains production-line tests for various phone components, a root checker, and lots of information readouts. The important part, though, is a "DiagEnabled" activity with a method called "escalatedUp." If this is set to "true," the app will allow root access over Android Debug Bridge, Android's command-line developer tools.

The method for gaining root is password protected, but the password lasted all of three hours once the method was discovered. With the help of David Weinstein and the Now Secure team, the group discovered the magic word is "angela," which is possibly another Mr. Robot reference, just like the "Elliot Alderson" handle. (We swear this is real and not a Mr. Robot AGR.)

Wireless charging on the latest iPhone is convenient, but it hasn't been very fast. Apple's iPhone X, iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are about to get a little bit quicker about it, though, with the release of iOS 11.2.




In that update, the phones will accept 7.5-watt charges on Qi charging pads, rather than the current 5 watts. MacRumors originally reported the news after a tip from accessory maker RAVpower.

Poshmark raises $87.5 million Series D, eyes expansion.
The fashion resale social network Poshmark is announcing that it's raised $87.5 million in Series D funding.

The company also introduced a significant app update on Tuesday that lets sellers act as virtual stylists. It's called the Poshmark Stylist Match, and it gives sellers the ability recommend items in near-real time that are tailored to the style of buyers. In addition to the Poshmark app, users can also access Stylist Match via a voice-enabled skill for Amazon Alexa.

Poshmark -- which now has nearly 3 million registered sellers -- launched in 2011 as a digital consignment store and fashion marketplace with a mobile-first approach. Its goal early on was to a build a social network experience out of its web of buyers and sellers.

We Are Fuzzy unveils bedtime shooter Sleep Tight for the Nintendo Switch.
Sleep Tight is a shooter for the kid in all of us, going back to the days when we had overactive imaginations at night and feared monsters coming out of the walls. This inaugural game from indie studio We Are Fuzzy is an arcade-style, twin-stick shooter. The main character, who’s a kid, builds a base with pillows and furniture, and then he shoots his Nerf gun at the monsters as they attack from all directions during the night.

It’s kind of like having the creatures in the Monsters, Inc. film creep out of the closet and start attacking the lone kid. He has to fight back against them using his customized toy Nerf guns and use barriers to block them. It’s like an arcade shooter and a tower-defense game combined. The self-funded game will debut on the Nintendo Switch and PC in the first quarter of 2018.

“This game is wrapped in blankets of nostalgia,” said Maxx Burman, the creative director and cofounder of Los Angeles-based We Are Fuzzy, in an interview.

Skype is introducing a new version of its telecommunications app geared toward online tutors and small businesses.

Known as the Skype Professional Account,  the new service will initially only be available on desktop and will be landing shortly in preview for U.S. users, who can apply for early access now.

The new Skype incarnation isn’t to be confused with the existing Skype for Business offering that promises enterprise-focused features such as support for 250 people in a single meeting, online broadcasting, presentation tools, and deep integration with Microsoft’s Office apps. The Skype Professional Account, by contrast, ushers in a bunch of new features aimed at those who make money through the internet, such as career coaches or those who give guitar lessons remotely.

Facebook is quietly working on a mysterious new app for its Live Video platform. It’s called Fan Club App, and it appears to be specifically designed to help you and other influencers boost engagement with your audience.

Whether you love Kodi for its open-ended, customizable approach to streaming, or hate it for the shady stuff that runs rampant on the platform, installing the open-source software media center has always been an “at your own risk” proposition.  If you picked up an Apple TV 2 back in the day and installed Kodi on it, the risk has finally come back to bite you: the system is vulnerable to an exploit of the most trivial variety. That warning comes from TvAddons, a site for DIY streaming enthusiast with a focus on Kodi, Android TV and other open platforms. The problem with the Apple TV 2, according to the article’s anonymous author, is that it requires a jailbreak in order to run Kodi. That’s not news; newer Apple TVs require a jailbreak to run Kodi as well.

With randomness undoubtedly a key element in the design of all these different types of loot box, the comparison with gambling is one we see frequently made. It’s not hard to see why. When you compare the feeling of opening a loot box with the one you get when you watch a little white ball whizz around a roulette wheel, or a slot-machine whirl and clunk, the similarities are certainly striking. Gabe Zichermann, gamification guru and expert on technology addiction, said of loot boxes: “It is literally, exactly, a slow machine.”

Apple plans to add a 3D sensor to the back of the iPhone, too.
The iPhone X's front-facing TrueDepth sensor array could be used for more than just Face ID authentication, and it fits neatly into Apple's broader march into augmented reality on the iPhone, but the iPhone X's rear camera still uses a combination of motion sensors and two rear cameras for AR. That could change in next year's iPhone; sources cited by Bloomberg claim that Apple plans to add 3D camera technology to the rear of next year's iPhone in addition to the TrueDepth array already on the iPhone X's front.

The rear camera might not use the same technology as the TrueDepth sensor array used for Face ID on the front of the iPhone X, however. Rather, the rear array might use time-of-light sensors, which would map objects in 3D space by calculating how long it takes for light from its laser to bounce off of an object in its field of view. Bloomberg's sources say that adoption of this technology is not certain, but it seems to be what Apple is testing right now. The technology is in development at Sony, Panasonic, Infineon Technologies, and STMicroelectronics.

In the iPhone X, Apple aligned the telephoto and wide-angle lens cameras on the back vertically (instead of horizontally, as on the iPhone 8 Plus) to make augmented reality applications more effective. But without a more advanced way to read and track 3D space, AR apps will remain limited. Unlike more robust hardware like Microsoft's HoloLens, the current iPhones' rear cameras can't deal well with surfaces that aren't flat. They can't even track when an object is obstructing the camera's view; current iPhone AR apps place an object in space relative to the flat surface but can't partially obscure it behind a real-world obstacle, for example.

Apple Watch Series 3 propels company back into wearables lead.
Apple’s release of a smartwatch with cellular connectivity is proving to be a hit with consumers. As a result, Apple is once again the market leader for wearables on the wrist.

According to the latest report from Canalys, Apple shipped 3.9 million smartwatches in Q3 2017. The new Apple Watch Series 3 was only on sale the last 10 days of that quarter, but still apparently had a big impact on sales.

Xiaomi and Fitbit respectively shipped 3.6 million and 3.5 million wearable bands, an increase from the previous quarter for both.

A typical survival sandbox might simulate things like hunger and thirst, and maybe require players to search for shelter and stay warm, but SCUM, a survival game set on a prison island that’s been turned into a game show, takes this one step further. And then another step. And then a few more, until it’s reached a new zip code.

“We’re simulating the human body,” explains Gamepires’ technical director and studio co-founder Andrej Levenski. “When we simulate the body, everything else can be driven by this. If you’re hungry, your hands are shaking, you’re tired—this will influence everything else in the game. With all the stuff like metabolism, you’ll see a huge difference between characters. It makes it very unpredictable.”
