Ulpotha Eye Clinic

On 23 April 2019, less than a week after the bombings in Colombo and the East, Ulpotha hosted a free 5-day eye clinic for the surrounding villages. At the intitiative of Dr. Shay Zhang, an Australian optometrist who had previously stayed at Ulpotha a number of times, a team of 12 volunteer optometrists from the University of Melbourne braved the travel bans to come examine the eyesight and provide glasses for over 1500 rural locals. Back home, the team of volunteers crowdfunded the cost of sourcing eyeglasses locally in Sri Lanka.
